German Battery law amendment ensures national recovery and high-quality recycling


The German Federal Cabinet has initiated an amendment to the Battery Act. According to it, all battery manufacturers will have to register, and all take-back systems for used batteries will be approved by a single body. New minimum standards for the collection of used batteries should guarantee high-quality and safe disposal. In addition, the Battery law implements the new EU requirements for extended manufacturer responsibility. As of 2023, manufacturers’ financial contributions to return systems must be based on ecological criteria. The draft law, due to enter into force on 1 January 2021, is now forwarded to the Bundestag and Bundesrat. to the Parliament.
