Additional comments: In the Netherlands, municipalities are responsible for the collection of household waste. Companies with similar waste can ask the municipality to collect their waste. Municipalities will decide on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibility of collection: Private scheme: Reinigingsdienst Rd4 is responsible for the collection and processing of waste streams for the municipality of Landgraaf. Landgraaf has the so called volume / frequency system (DIFTAR) for municipal waste collection, making it financially attractive to offer as little residual waste as possible, and separate as much waste as possible. Separate collection of PMD (PMD stands for Plastic packaging, Metal packaging and Beverge cartons), glass, paper and cardboard. D-t-d collection: PMD, paper and cardboard, mixed residual waste. Bringpoints: glass, paper and packaging, mixed residual waste. (RD4 has PMD bringpoints, but not in Landgraaf area).

Plastic + Metal + Composite	First sorting or treatment destination	The collected PMD bags are sorted at large sorting stations where plastic, metal and beverage cartons are separated. After the drinks cartons have been sorted, they are compressed into large bales and delivered to the paper industry. Here, the cartons join the PPW waste stream. In a large rotating drum filled with water, the cardboard fibers are loosened from the plastic and aluminum layers. This creates paper pulp that is processed into new paper products in the paper factory. The plastic and aluminum are further processed.
	Output from first sorting or treatment	Aluminium and steel are melted and used in as raw materials into the production process as raw material. Paper/cardboard is first cleaned and sorted and after dissolved in water in order to produce paper fiber pulp. From this pulp, new paper/cardboard can be made. Plastic is sorted into different types of plastic and contamination is removed. After, these different types of plastic are baled and transported to a recycling facility.
	Subsequent sorting or treatment steps	In the recycling facility, plastic bales are shredded, cleaned, fused and converted into grains (granules). The granulate is the raw material for new products.
Residual waste	First sorting or treatment destination	Residual waste collected via bring points and door-to-door collection is transported to RD4 sites. Data shows that the mixed residual waste contains 9% plastic, 5% paper and cardboard and 3% glass. Data does not show if these waste streams are seperated. The remaining fraction is incinerated with recovery of energy (electricity and heat) and bottom ash (metals, inorganic materials).
